Since 2001, the New York Police Department has reduced the number of uniformed officers on city streets. However, the NYPD has also grown the ranks of its elite K-9 squads in the world. Imported from Central and Eastern Europe, these animals can pursue criminals, track missing persons, locate dead bodies, sniff out explosive chemicals and ā€”in the case of Danz, one the NYPD’s treasured K-9sā€” conduct transit patrols in city subways.
